Cinematography: The Art Behind Film

 Cinematography: The Art Behind Film

Cinematographer on-set of "The Grand Budapest Hotel"

Since the Kinetograph was created in 1891, the world of cinema has been rapidly evolving ever since. In the relatively short span of 139 years, over 500,000 official cinema films have been made. Home movies, skits, commercials, unofficial films, advertisements, and other video content account for literally billions, if not trillions, of hours of content.

My love for this world of cinematography is akin to it's vast, unending world of opportunity. One can manifest any story, in any setting, from anywhere in the universe, and bring it to life on the screen. This endlessness of creativity is what's always excited me. Ever since I was a little kid, I've been fascinated by the waypeople create and manipulate media into the films, commercials, and videos we watch today. But more specifically, theniche I obsess with is Cinematography, otherwise known as the art of creating motion pictures. It's been my obsession, and a life-longpassion, to someday become a cinematographer.

A cinematographer is not someone who just grabs a camera and films a subject. A true cinematographer sets out to create a project. They pour their heart and soul into the research, writing, and building of a story. They sift through hundreds of ideas to find something that strikes meaning with them. Once a story is favored, it has to be written out and developed for the silver screen. Actors and crew members have to be sought out and hired for the projects. And now, that a basis has been made, the job has just begun.  They are responsible for taking what their crews have given them, and make everything look as it should. Cinematographers search for the best equipment for the project. They sift through thousands of camera lenses, props, lights, and even locations. Once everything is found and suited to match the tone of the project, they create. Once they bring something to life, they are responsible for maintaining the livelihood and passion of their project until the credits roll. Cinematographers use their tools and crew members to build sets to accommodate the mood of the film, they dim lights to match the emotion of a scene, frame subjects to convey cryptic messages, and the list goes on and on. Everything physical, and tangible, on screen is directly related to work that the cinematographer has performed. They are the gatekeepers of what makes it to the screen. Without these people, and their passion for film, our world would be a lot less creative.

Someday, I want to be one of these people. It doesn't matter how large my paycheck is, or how amazing the views are. My biggest dream, as of right now, is to become a Cinematographer. I long to be an artist behind the films we will someday see.
